Brief Introduction of “8858” Short Message Service Program

    On January 8, 2003, China Children and Teenagers’ Fund and China Mobile jointly launched the “8858” SMS program, which is considered to be the first attempt in term of cell phone fundraising in China. 8858 in Chinese pronunciation is equivalent to “help me “(bang bang wo ba). Over the last years, 8858 proved to be a very successful fundraising approach at current age when the cell phone and SMS is widely used in China. The fund raised by 8858 played a very important role in school restoration after Sinkiang earthquake, fight against SARS and handicapped children relief.

    The “8858” SMS program built a new platform for showing love to Chinese children charitable cause, forcefully promoting the development of “pocket money charity” concept in China.“8858” SMS program covers all the cell phone users in China. Compared with traditional donation methods, “8858” SMS program has the advantage of doing donations regardless of place and time. The donors can do their donations by dialing “1 – 30” as the planned donation sum in their cell phones. This method of donation satisfies the need of donation of different groups of people.

Success of 8858 SMS PROGRAM of the last four years
    Since the launching of 8858 SMS program in 2003, The total fund raised amount to RMB 21, 231, 389. Among which, 2003 raised RMB 14,323,038, 2004 raised RMB 2, 157, 472, 2005 raised RMB 4, 750, 779 and 2006 raised RMB 2, 914, 826.
    CCTF has used the fund raised by “8858” SMS program to various worthy cause .

Calendar of “8858” SMS

1. On January 8, 2003, CCTF and China Mobile launched “8858” SMS program in the Macao
   Hall of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
2. In 2003, CCTF used RMB 1.000, 000 to build two “Spring Bud Project primary schools”
   in Sinkiang “2.24” earthquake area. This was the first charitable donation by “8858” SMS
   program since its launching over a month ago
3. On March 15, 2003, CCTV held an evening party for fundraising, in the party, CCTF raised
   RMB 3, 593, 680 by 8858 SMS program for the treatment of small friend Zhu Xun, who
   was suffering from hearing problem because of over dosage of injection. The charitable
   donation ensured that Zhu Xun returned to normal life.
4. During the SARS period in 2003, CCTF used RMB 2.5 million raised from 8858 SMS
   program for local women and children to fight against SARS and other diseases and
   assisted the children of medical personnel, who died from SARS, RMB 2000 each
   year, till their graduation from universities.
5. On January 8, 2004, CCTF held the first anniversary celebration of 8858 SMS program in
   Chongqing Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
6. In January, 2005, CCTF and China Red Cross Society jointly sponsored fundraising activities
   for relieving Indian Ocean Tsunami victims. RMB 331,861 was raised by 8858 SMS
   program.
7. June 13, 2005, in getting the information of a Hebei girl named Xiao Xia being maltreated,
   CCTF decided, on the same day, to raise social money for her by 8858 SMS program. In about
   20 days, RMB 10, 000 was raised.
8. On October 17, 2005, CCTF and “Music Radio” of Central People's Broadcast Station jointly
   developed “I want to go to school! – smiling action” charitable activity by 8858 SMS program.
   RMB 378, 080 was raised.

    From October 23 to December 31, 2006, CCTF and　“Music Radio” of Central People's
Broadcast Station jointly developed “I want to go to school loving march” charitable activity to
raise fund for dropout children by 8858 SMS program. RMB 349, 360 was raised.
